The 3 line was one of the busiest lines, operating out W. 6th St. (now the 18 bus line). The 3 line had a private right of way parallel to Gramercy Place, midblock between Gramercy and Wilton Place, from 6th St. to 3rd St. In this right of way, between 3rd St. and 4th St., there were sidings between the inbound and outbound tracks used for layovers for some of the 3 and R (Third St.) line cars. Beyond this point the 3 line cars went to Melrose & Larchmont. But the Larchmont Village end of the line saw much less ridership than the 6th St. section east of Gramercy. So many 3 line cars turned around at 3rd and Gramercy.
