D Line

The D line was mostly a short-turn of the 3 line, serving the eastern part of the Westlake district. The line ran out the 3 line on W. 6th to Alvarado, then turned right and ran up Alvardo to 3rd, turned right again, and ran up Bonnie Brae to Beverly.

In the first photo below a D car has just left its terminal at Beverly (in the background) and is heading south on Bonnie Brae.

In the next photo a D line car is running downhill on Alvarado Street, north of 6th St.

In the following photo an inbound D car has turned onto Beaudry from 6th Street with St. Paul St. in the background. The large apartment building behind the streetcar no longer exists. The Harbor Freeway now exists where the photog was standing.

In the next photo we see a westbound D car proceeding on 5th Street, with Pershing Square at right and the Philharmonic Auditorium Office Building (demolished 1984) at left.

The last photo below shows the east terminal of the D line — Central Station. Until the opening of the present Union Station in 1939, Central Station, at 5th and Central, was the depot for SP and UP passenger trains. The car on the track next to the station is probably on the D line.
