The H line meandered more than any other LARY line. The line began at Western & Melrose, ran east on Melrose, then south on or adjacent to Heliotrope (hence the "H" designation), east briefly on Beverly, south briefly on Vermont to 1st St. The line had a short private right of way from 1st & Vermont to Bimini Place, and ran on Bimini Place to the Bimini Recreation Center, and thence east on a private right of way to two blocks west of Rampart Blvd, where it entered 2nd St. The line then ran south on Rampart (originally in a reserved median) to 6th, east on 6th, south on Alvarado, and then east on 7th. The line ran south on Maple Avenue eventually terminating at 63rd & Wall.
Starting our tour towards the Hollywood end of the line, the photo below, taken in 1947, looks north on Heliotrope -- the street that gives the "H" its name.
At 1st & Vermont, the H turned east onto a short right of way to Bimini Place, which it traversed for a very short distance, turning east onto a private right of way that traversed an open area that had been part of the Los Angeles City oilfield. In the next photo an inbound H car has just left Bimini Place, in the distance. The Bimini Recreation Center, with its indoor pool, is out of the photo to the left.
Once the H line right of way reaches Virgil, it passes between houses, with signals governing the crossing of Virgil. The next shot looks east down the H line right of way.
At Second Street the street cars re-enter street trackage for two short blocks to Rampart. Here is a photo looking east on 2nd Street towards Rampart.
The next photo shows an H line car turning left off of Alvarado Street onto 7th Street in 1947, with MacArthur Park in the background.
