Shuttles

Prior to 1940, the L line operated out Temple Street and Virgil Avenue and the A operated as a short-turn of the L, running up Edgeware Rd. to Douglas and Kensington Sts. in Angeleno Heights. After elimination of the L in 1940, the A line was rerouted out Virgil Ave. This left the Edgeware Rd. branch as an isolated shuttle line. Below we see a shuttle car at Edgeware and Temple in 1942. The Hollywood Freeway passes under Edgeware Rd. about where the photographer was standing. The tracks are still intact under Edgeware Rd. paving north of the freeway bridge. A group in Angeleno Heights is currently proposing that the street paving be scraped off the rails to revive the Edgeware shuttle as an historic trolley line.

The next photo shows the City Terrace-Evergreen-Euclid shuttle in the 1940s. This shuttle was called the "E" line. The southbound car has just entered Wabash Avenue from City Terrace Dr.
