The S line ran on Western Ave. from Santa Monica Blvd. to 3rd St., and on 7th St. from Vermont to San Pedro St. It ran south on San Pedro St. and Avalon Blvd. eventually reaching Manchester & Central.
In the following photo, from the 1940s, we see an S line streetcar leaving the terminal at Santa Monica Boulevard headed south on Western Avenue. A Los Angeles Motor Coach bus on the Western Avenue bus line is at right. This S line track on Western Avenue would be abandoned in 1950 with no bus replacement other than the existing Western Avenue bus line (begun in 1923).
Los Angeles Motor Coach was a joint PE/LARY operation, founded in 1923 in response to complaints about poor service, particularly poor connections between Hollywood (served by PE) and the areas to the south (served by LARY). In 1949 PE and Los Angeles Transit Lines divided the LAMC assets, with LATL getting the Western Ave. bus line.
Next we have an afternoon rush hour shot of San Pedro Street in 1956, looking north towards 8th Street. A sizeable flock of riders, below right, are waiting for a southbound S car at the 9th Street safety island. Yellow Cars and Red Cars continued to share this piece of San Pedro Street until 1961.
